Cumanacoa was founded in 1717 by Domingo Arias on his return from an expedition to the mouth of the Guarapiche river, undertaken in an attempt to destroy a settlement of French pirates. The new town was first called Baltasar de las Arias but the Indian name Cumanacoa prevailed; as did Caracas over Santiago de Leon, still to be found on our maps. |
