After walking for two hours we reached the foot of the high inland mountain chain. There new rock formations begin, and with them another kind of vegetation. Everything seems more grand and picturesque. The soil, rich in springs, is furrowed by streams in every direction. Gigantic trees, covered with lianas, rise from the ravines; their black bark, burned by the sun and oxygen, contrasts with the fresh green of the pothos and dracontium, whose tough, shiny leaves reach as much as 2 meters in length.
